How Much is Safe?
This depends on the alcohol content of
the drink and the quantity consumed.
In order to compare the alcohol content
of different drinks it is helpful to
think in terms of a "standard drink".
The table on the next page is based on
pub measures in England and Wales. Many
people pouring drinks at home give a
larger measure! Pubs in Scotland and
Northern Ireland serve larger measures
of spirits. At present there is no
enforced standard measure for wine.
"Extra strong" beers and lagers may be
more than twice as strong as "ordinary"
