This drug is derived from the opium
poppy. Pure heroin is a white powder,
but it is more often sold mixed with
other powders to dilute it.
Doctors sometimes use heroin in the
treatment of very severe pain. It is a
class A drug (Misuse of Drugs Act).
It can be sniffed, smoked, injected
or swallowed. Most users eventually
inject the drug in order to increase
the effect. This carries a serious risk
of infection. Many serious diseases are
spread in this way, including AIDS.
