Genital Herpes This disease is caused by a virus very like the one that causes ordinary cold sores. The symptoms usually start about five days after infection with tingling and burning in the genital region and a 'flu like illness with head and back pain and fever. Later, small blisters will appear in and around the genital area. It is possible for women to have these in the vagina and not be aware of them.
