Offline Database

Healthdata was also available as a disc based offline database, also in the viewdata format.  It seems as if it was mostly a copy of the online content, so we present it here for your delight and access..

Do note that this information is at least 20 years old.  Please do not rely on anything in here as current medical advice; for that please visit the NHS website.

   What is AIDS ?

    Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

This disease was first recognised in
the United States in 1981. The virus
responsible for it, now known as HIV,
 was discovered soon afterwards.

The first people with the disease
were all male homosexuals. We now know
that you don't have to be homosexual to
catch AIDS or transmit it to others.

In healthy people, the body responds
to infection by developing immunity to
fight it. The immune system in people
with AIDS doesn't work properly because
of the action of HIV on important white
 blood cells.
