What is AIDS ? Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This disease was first recognised in the United States in 1981. The virus responsible for it, now known as HIV, was discovered soon afterwards. The first people with the disease were all male homosexuals. We now know that you don't have to be homosexual to catch AIDS or transmit it to others. In healthy people, the body responds to infection by developing immunity to fight it.
