Offline Database

Healthdata was also available as a disc based offline database, also in the viewdata format.  It seems as if it was mostly a copy of the online content, so we present it here for your delight and access..

Do note that this information is at least 20 years old.  Please do not rely on anything in here as current medical advice; for that please visit the NHS website.

          SICKLE CELL DISEASE
 ***************************************

     Sickle cell disease affects black
people from Africa or the Carribean. It
may also occur in people from Asia.

About 1 in 400 black people in the
 UK have sickle cell disease.

The name sickle cell refers to the
crescent (sickle) shape of the red
blood cells in people with the disease.

Red blood cells contain a chemical
 called haemoglobin which carries
oxygen around the body. In sickle cell
 disease the haemoglobin is slightly
 different causing the sickle shape.
