SICKLE CELL DISEASE

If both parents have sickle cell
trait, their children have a 1 in 4
chance of having sickle cell disease.
Half their children would be sickle
cell trait and 1 in 4 would have no
sickle haemoglobin. There is no risk of
transmitting the disease unless both
parents have sickle cell trait.
Blood tests are used to check for
sickle cell disease and trait.
Babies with sickle cell disease
show no symptoms until they are about
six months old.
