CHD What is it? Coronary heart disease occurs when the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen. Blood is supplied to the heart muscle through the coronary arteries. If these arteries are blocked the heart will become short of oxygen. ATHEROMA is a fatty substance which builds up on the inside of the arteries over many years. It is this layer of atheroma which causes the narrowing and blocking of the coronary arteries. ANGINA, a heavy chest pain, is caused by partly blocked arteries. It is often brought on by exercise or emotion. key # continue
