Sulphur Dioxide - Acid Rain Sulphur dioxide, mainly produced by power stations, factories and motor vehicles, is dispersed long distances in the atmosphere. When combined with water, a mild acid is formed. This acid rain has been blamed for a great deal of environmental damage to forests, rivers and lakes. Not all scientists agree that this damage is entirely due to acid rain, but sulphur dioxide pollution is still a major concern. Steps are being taken to reduce emissions from factories and power stations. It is likely that new leglislation will be introduced to further control this problem. key 0 for index
