Raw sewage is still often discharged
into rivers or the sea. Sometimes this
is because sewage treatment works break
 down, or are overloaded.

    Sewage contains bacteria and viruses
which are dangerous to health. Sewage
in rivers can destroy fish and other
 wildlife dependant on fish.

Sewage in sea water can contaminate
shellfish used for food. Despite strict
 controls, contaminated shellfish still
 cause outbreaks of disease.

    More investment in sewage treatment
is needed to prevent these problems.
