Sewage pollution Raw sewage is still often discharged into rivers or the sea. Sometimes this is because sewage treatment works break down, or are overloaded. Sewage contains bacteria and viruses which are dangerous to health. Sewage in rivers can destroy fish and other wildlife dependant on fish. Sewage in sea water can contaminate shellfish used for food. Despite strict controls, contaminated shellfish still cause outbreaks of disease.
