Industrial pollution Industrial waste finds its way into rivers and the sea. Oil and chemicals damage wildlife. Heavy metals, such as mercury, are readily taken up by fish. Toxic levels may be found in fish used for food. Factories must apply for permission to discharge effluent into rivers or sewers. Water authorities check the effluent for dangerous chemicals.
