Syphilis
This disease is caused by an organism
present in the blood and other fluids.
It is serious but not very common.
The symptoms occur in three stages.
1. A painless sore in the genital area
(or mouth after oral sex) This starts a
few weeks after contact and lasts 2-3
weeks before resolving completely.
2. 2-6 months later, skin rash and a
mild 'flu like illness with fever.
3. Usually years later. Causes serious
damage to brain and other organs.
Antibiotics can now completely cure
syphilis but careful follow-up needed.
