Offline Database

Healthdata was also available as a disc based offline database, also in the viewdata format.  It seems as if it was mostly a copy of the online content, so we present it here for your delight and access..

Do note that this information is at least 20 years old.  Please do not rely on anything in here as current medical advice; for that please visit the NHS website.

          SICKLE CELL DISEASE
 ***************************************

The disease is inherited and so it
tends to run in families. To understand
how this occurs, it is necessary to
 explain a little about genetics.

It is possible to carry the genes
 responsible for sickle cell haemoglobin
 without having sickle cell disease.
Such people have sickle cell trait, and
 will be perfectly well.

When both parents have sickle cell
trait, their children could inherit a
sickle cell gene from each of them. If
this happens the child will have sickle
 cell disease.
